How to play Connect Four
Connect Four is played on a grid of 7 columns and 6 rows. Players take turns dropping a disc into a column, where it falls to the lowest empty space. Red moves first. Line up four of your discs horizontally, vertically or diagonally to win. If all 42 spaces fill without a line, it's a draw.
Click or tap a column, or press 1 to 7. Choose Easy AI, Hard AI or 2 Players above the board. Against the AI you play Red and start. Easy AI takes wins and blocks yours when it sees them but otherwise plays loosely, while Hard AI looks five moves ahead. You can also play a friend online with a room code.
Tips
- βΈStart in the middle column. More lines of four pass through the centre than any other column.
- βΈBefore each move, check whether your disc lets your opponent complete four in the space above it.
- βΈAim for two threats at once. Your opponent can only block one.
- βΈWatch which row a threat is on. A winning space that can't be filled yet often decides the endgame.
Connect Four FAQ
- Who goes first in Connect Four?
- Red. Against the AI you are Red, so you always start. Online, who plays Red alternates each game.
- How strong is the Hard AI?
- It searches five moves ahead, never misses an immediate win and blocks obvious threats. A double threat is usually what beats it.
- Can a game end in a draw?
- Yes, if all 42 spaces fill up and nobody has four in a row.
- Can two people play on one device?
- Yes. Choose 2 Players and take turns tapping columns, Red first, then Yellow.
