How to play Tic-Tac-Toe

Tic-Tac-Toe is played on a 3x3 grid. Players take turns placing X and O, and X always moves first. Get three of your marks in a row, across, down or diagonally, to win. If all nine squares fill without a line, it's a draw. Click or tap a square, or press 1 to 9, where 1 is top-left and 9 is bottom-right.

Choose a mode above the board. Against Easy AI or Hard AI you play X and go first. 2 Players lets two people share one device. To play a friend online, create a room and share the five-character code or invite link; the first move then alternates each game. Your wins this session are counted below the board.

Tips

  • ▸Always block first. If your opponent has two in a row with the third square empty, stop it.
  • ▸Win with forks, moves that make two threats at once. Your opponent can only block one.
  • ▸Open in a corner against beginners and the Easy AI: any reply except the centre lets you force a win.

Tic-Tac-Toe FAQ

Can you beat the Hard AI at Tic-Tac-Toe?
No. It uses a perfect minimax search and never loses. If you also play perfectly, every game is a draw.
How do I play Tic-Tac-Toe online with a friend?
Create a room in the multiplayer panel and send your friend the five-character code or invite link. No account is needed.
How hard is the Easy AI?
It plays the best move only some of the time and a random square otherwise, so it makes mistakes you can punish.
Who goes first?
X always starts. Against the AI that's you; online, the player who starts swaps each game.
